Education and Poverty Reduction in Africa

Education is a unique investment in life. This basic principle is the key to policies on education by nations of Africa. Education has continued to advance, diversify and broaden its reach and coverage since the history of man. Every country develops its system of education to convey and support its socio-cultural identity and also to meet the challenges of the times. There is a moment in history when a new direction has to be given to an aging process. That moment is now. The continent of Africa has reached a stage in its development when efforts must be made to ensure that the fruits of change reach all sectors of the economy. The streets of Africa are flooded today by graduates in all fields of education seeking unavailable jobs.

The development of any continent or nation is anchored on the workforce it parades; this explains the reason why every nation requires its members to develop basic physical, intellectual, social, and all other competence needed for the development of the said Nation. The economic situation of Africa today is telling on her system of education, where every employable organ of the society places much emphasis on certificates. It is imperative to say that this attitude has not only affected the mentality of African students but also the economic situation of the continent.

Taking a look at curriculums developed for studies in African schools, one will notice that students are educated to seek jobs rather than create jobs. Year in year out schools in Africa turn out graduates who rushed to the streets seeking non-existing jobs because they have been educated and mentored to do so thus the creation of poverty. The result of this is massive under-employment or unemployment which in the long run cascades to crime and the likes.

In view of the developing nature of Africa and the non-availability of jobs despite the fact that willing and able-bodied youths are armed with certificates yet flood the society in search of visually non-existing jobs, it is therefore required that the education system should make sure that, academic curricula of the various educational institutions are reviewed regularly with the aim of directing its focus towards job creation rather than job-seeking hence directing the focus of African students towards self-employment, show examples by being engaged in owning businesses in the aspect of the courses they teach and so on.
