The Digital Marketplace; PMDAfrica’s tool for poverty eradication.

Despite the socioeconomic evolution in human interactions, trade has proved to be an indispensable life wire in the existence of man. Barring all the intricacies, the core substance of trade is the exchange of commodities.

Trade began with the direct exchange of goods and services among buyers and sellers in a system called barter. Marred by double coincidence of wants, barter was jettisoned and a medium of exchange was introduced. What constituted a medium of exchange depends on what the people generally accept as a means of payment of goods and services.

The medium of exchange has been one thing or the other over centuries. Nations began to legislate on what could be a reliable means of exchange and how to measure value within their own borders and outside their economic territories.

Technological growth and development have further simplified trade through the introduction of electronic currency which has removed the traditional limiting factors. For instance, the problem of time taken to change currencies across borders are removed, the speed of trade even within the local communities is enhanced. Through bank transfers, trade can take place. The fear of being attacked by robbers and hoodlums for carrying physical cash around is also partially eradicated.

Commerce has truly evolved across the world. We are in the new era where an individual need not acquire a physical store to be engaged in commerce. With a working smartphone, an individual can own and operate a digital store. The advantages of this development are immeasurable. There is no limited market as digital stores are open to the world. Patronage of this type of store cut across nations and continents of the world depending on the marketing and publicity power of the owner of the store.

Again there is the existence of universal currency. There is no need for the exchange of naira to dollar or whatsoever before one can buy and sell. This is because buying and selling are done electronically. Orders can be placed and goods or services supplied without physical contact between the buyer and the seller. This has made commerce easy. There are several other advantages but space may not allow us to explore them all here.
